The 61-year-old presenter disclosed on Thursday's (July 17) program that CBS has decided to end his nightly talk show, with the final episode scheduled to air in May.
Stephen, who took over from David Letterman in 2015, will not be passing the show on to another host as it has been canceled altogether.
Addressing the audience's displeasure, he remarked, "I share your feelings. It's not just the end of our show but the end of The Late Show on CBS. I'm not being replaced. This is all coming to an end."
Expressing gratitude towards CBS and the audience, Stephen acknowledged the team of 200 people who work on the show and expressed his enjoyment of the job.
Network executives praised Stephen's work on the show, calling him "irreplaceable." They announced that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will conclude its run in May 2026.
The decision to end the show was attributed solely to financial reasons, according to a statement released by Paramount Global and CBS.
The statement recognized the show's achievements and its impact on late-night television, expressing gratitude for Stephen and his team's contributions.
